This Day in History August 28, 2008

This Day in History, Martin Luther King Jr. made his famous "I Have a Dream" speech on the steps of Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC 45 years ago. This Day in Social Studies we learned how to figure latitude and longitude. By starting with latitude first, let's say 30 degrees north and moving across the US map and then doing longitude, starting with 90 degrees west and moving down, we ended up in Illinois. We were able to visit a number of states by finding their latitude and longitude. Then we reviewed timezones. Did you know that there are 6 timezones in the US? They are Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific, Alaska and Hawaii-Aleutian. We live in the Central Timezone, so if it is 8AM in Illinois, then we added one more hour in the Eastern TimeZone so it would be 9AM and then we subtracted one hour in the Mountain TimeZone to make it 7AM. And that's what we studied this day in History.
